I got a deal, yes! Yep, I think I did this time! I'm looking at my hands and my A** and there is no vaseoline!
I was cruisin' through Craigslist a few days ago and came upon a Meyers hard top. The guy had it listed off his '60 CJ5, but the measurements were all wrong for an early jeep.
It was close by, I was on Vay-k, and took the Harley up to see it.
I made a template of my softtop door and the windshield angle, took some measurement of my rag top and tub and off I went.
The top was in near perfect shape. Was orginally from Misouri, (The way these parts travel, if it could only talk)!
Someone had replaced his windshield with a newer one hense the top fitting my '74 and his '60, (he THINKS it's a '60, no vin plate, no title, it's a yard bird, guy know zip about mechainics and the jeep).
All the measurements match my tub? Great!
The P.O. had it in his cellar for like 25 years.
There is no rust on it, the doors bottoms are perrrrfect!
Dropped a deposit on it, came back with my buddys truck and hauled it home.
All had to do to it was to take the doors apart, the window slide were stuck, but short of sanding and painting it ready to mount!
    So my question.....
Is there a seal between the top and the tub??
What about the windshield to top area???
When I was a dumb kid, I used globs of silicone to seal the top on the windshield.
I was thinking of some of that foam strip insulation between the tub and top, (like @ the doors), but between the top and the windshield?
I hope the top will only be on fer the winter, (but maybe if the top looks good all year round).
    Joe
I was thinking of 3" thick PURPLE shag carpet glues to the inside, cuz chicks dig shag carpet!:D

The joints of the top were sealed with butyl caulk (strip caulk, Moretite, same stuff). You can buy it at your home center. It's sticky and does not harden. The top was also sealed to the body with this stuff. Same for the windshield.

    The doors use adhesive-backed foam.

I'd resist the urge to put any insulation up in the top and make the top even more top-heavy than it already is.

I used 1" x 1/4" foam tape on the top to the body, Stuck it to the top so when you remove the top you don't have the ugly tape on the rail of the Jeep.
Used the 1 1/2" X 1/4' camper tape for the seal at the windshield.

Might have some pictures if you need them.

i used butyl caulk and put a fat roll of it down.
then when i tightened the bolts i cut the excess off where it smooshed out.

The reason it fits both your 74 and his 60 isn't because someone swapped his windshield, it's because all tops from 55-75 will interchange. The 76-83 windshield is different from the 55-75, but either top will work on either era if you swap the windshield appropriate to the top (the tubs never changed dimensionally).

I've seen a few of those old tops on jeeps and they put a piece of that pipe insulation foam that looks like a noodle kids use in the pool on top of windshield frame and it looked real clean like it belonged and seams to seal good

    Rodger-Dodger!
I have a few "almost complete" rolls of that butyl tape from when I was a Chrysler mechanic in the bottom of me tool box. I hadn't thought of that!:D
Now that I think of it, I used the foam insulation tape between the cap top and truck bed on my Ferd Pick-me-up truck.
I can never keep track of what year bodies/tops fit what year jeeps!
I know trhe older CJ's have a more "straighter" windshield, but could have sworn the tub was narrower, (or maybe it was the axles????):?but I guess I swore wrong!:)
I think the top weights more than my fiberglass tub!
I have visons of putting the top on and like Fred Flintstone at the drive in, the jeep flips!
(For you young whipper-snappers who don't remmeber when these jeeps were "brand new", Fred Flintstone was a cartoon.
In the beginning of the cartoon, the whole family would hop into his car, (a log with 2 stone roller wheels. He "paddle" to make it move), off they'd go to a "car hop" (you know where they roller skate to you car and take the order, then bring the food out on a tray that clipped onto your window).
The girl would bring this GAINT thing-ribs maybe?? out to his "car" and when they attached the tray to his car, the car would flip on it's side):D
I guess you had to be born back then........:)
Heck, the extra weight may even make my jeep ride better!!!
    Joe
A man going through withdrawl! My jeep is done and on the road, my house is fixed, my bikes running- what's a man with tools to do??

    Well it's on!:D
The 1 hour J.O.B. turned into a 7 hour marathon!:)
I didn't have quite enough butyl tape to make it acros the windshield, mehh so I used the foam insulation, smushed down nice.
I put a piece of electrical tape over the top of the insulation tape between the body and lid to keep the insulation tape from sticking to the tub IF I ever want to take it off.
The hardest part was aligning the top to the tub in the beginning, as my fibergalss tub wouldn't let use "C" clamps to hold it until it was all in place. The fiberglass also made it harder to "pull the tub down" when installing the screws.
I can tell you it's a LOT quieter in there now!
I dunno it looks kinda like an old guys jeep now!:)
    Joe
No jeeps. I think 18 is the limit. Me thinks a sailboat is next to build/restore.
The jeep would look cool pulling one!:v6:
