I am looking for some basic roll over protection for my cj3a. I have not found any kits out there for bars or cages for the flat fenders but have seen them for early cj5s any thoughts on adapting one of them would be appreciated. I am a rookey welder so I would not want to much welding involved. Thanks

Not the greatest pic but here is mine. I started with a bar from a 74 CJ5, bolted that in. Took a trip down to the local race shop and them bend me the windshield hoop and 4 spreaders. After that I added the dash bar and corner gussets. The front hoop is tied to the frame and the rest is to the body. I plan on connecting the base of the A-pillar to the base of the B-pillar this winter. I have done a complete barrel roll in it on the rocks in Moab but it was a very slow roll.

So the cj5 bar will bolt onto a cj3 tub with out modification? If so I found a kit at rockhard4x4parts.com for the early cj5.Good used early jeep parts seem to be in short supply around here (I think they all just rust away) so this might be my solution.

If you are talking about a full cage, the CJ5 front hoop legs will be too wide for a CJ3 tub unless you modify it. A rear hoop will fit fine though. The extremecustoms link above has 2a/3a cages in various configurations that are reasonable (not much more than I'd have to pay for the tube locally).

For a basic roll bar without a front hoop, look on Craigslist for a factory roll bar from a mid '70's CJ5. I picked up mine for $50. They are easy to tie to the frame at a later date. You can always build or have built a front hoop to tie to it. Kind of a pay/build as you go thing.
