1979 was the last year for both the 3-speeds and the T-18 heavy duty transmission. From 1980 on, CJs only got light duty passenger car transmission (SR4, T4, T5) and the medium duty T176.

    So yes, it's the right transmission for a 1980 CJ-5 with a 304.

Thanks guys, I was hoping it was the medium duty t-176, Im thinking I might pull the 304 and t-176,, rebuild them and swap them into my 84 cj7, which currently is equiped with the 258 and t-5.. then look for a better tranny to go with the 258 and install them in the cj5
