I have the factory D44 rear end and for the life of me I cannot find any vent hole. Where should this vent be? Does it no have one? Does it need one as it has been like it is for a long time without issue. 1967 cj5. The front has a D30(from 78 cj5) and the vent is right on top and easy to send a line up high.

    Thank you,

    Peter

Not sure about the offset rear ends, but the intermediate centered rears have the vent on the axle tube to the passenger side next to the brake line "t".

I just went and looked at mine. Can't find one on it either.

It's on the driver side axle tube, about half way across, on the back.

I had to wire wheel my axle to find it - covered with paint...

Yeah, I should have mentioned that it's nothing more than a small hole in the tube

My '53 M38A1 has what I believe to be the original to it Dana (actually Spicer) 44. The vent is located on the rearside of the carrier on the removable cover.

Do most jeepers here think it is important to have this hard to find vent working or even moved to a higher location? I have not found it yet so i dont know if it is there. It obviously has worked as is for over 4o years. I have a power lok in the rear with synthetic oil in it. When I replaced the oil end of last year it was very dirty and I a put a new seal on the dif cover. The front was much cleaner but it has a top mounted vent that I ran up by the radiator. Seemed like a better set up.

I drilled an tapped mine and ran the hose up high inside the RR fender well and put a filter on the end.

You need a working vent or as things heat up, pressure will build up and cause oil leaks. I'd do like Patrick did and make sure the small vent holes are plugged off. Did like Patrick did but put the vent in the cover. I added a sheet metal shield over the vent so gear oil wouldnt work it's way up and out the vent. Drilling and tapping the housing would be easier. Just watch placement so the ring gear doesn't splash oil out the vent.

I had drilled the housing itself and had the vent there, but it did just this. It would push oil all the way up the tube and saturated the filter and started dripping ..

Thank you for the input. I like the idea of relocating up high in the fender well to keep water out. Great ideas as usual and thank you again.

Funny, I always thought the vents were these little spring-loaded top-hat like thingies on top of the tube or the gear housing it's self.

Typically the flanged axle rears are like that but the tapered axle housings have the holes like shown
