This is my first experience with a dampener on the the throttle bell-crank. When you release the throttle, it slowly returns to idle.

What is the down side to removing it and driving over it. It seems to me that it holds it just above idle at the wrong time too often.

Do you have a pic? Never heard of a damper on the throttle linkage. I've seen tons of them on the carburetor to reduce emissions and what not...

Also knowing what year, engine, etc. of vehicle you are working with is helpful....

I had one on one of my old 225s. It's on my neighbors now. It's a piece that is threaded into the top of the intake that as the throttle is released it settles back on it. It has a diaphram type base with a spring that allows it to 'settle' slowly...

I have not had an issue since going to the 4bbl setups without them, so I don't think its a real issue.

Yeah, the Daughter's '70 has one but the throttle shaft arm hits it, not a bellcrank. That's the one I was talking about. Some thread into the intake and some are on the carb itself on a bracket but I've never seen one on the linkage itself.

I wonder if this is terminology confusion? Jim 302, is the one you are talking about the one threaded into the intake?

Terminology screw up. It is not a bellcrank, it is an arm.

    Thanks for the replies

The dashpot prevents stalling on sudden decel on standard transmission engines. It could be the shaft is slightly gummed up and sticking. Really not much to them at all, a shaft, the return spring and the body. You could try cleaning it with some carb cleaner. You could also take it off, you may have problems, you may not, won't know until you try.

I have 71 Dauntless with the original rochester carb. I removed the dashpot, and it runs fine.

If it does not cause stalling without it, the throttle would be a lot more the way I want it without it.
I would like it a lot more with a cable and a "arm" more like Porsche uses. The cable wraps around a french curve looking thing so that at low throttle positions you have a lot more precise control but I digress.

    Thanks again.
