Oil question

    My 1967 Buick 225 v6 has 71000 original miles and it is running very well with a newly rebuilt carb. As far as I know it has been getting 30 wt oil its entire life. I do have some oil leakage that collects on the pan and drips only slightly onto the garage floor. I have not been able to isolate where it is coming from but the levels stay fine so it is more inconvenient with the drips.

    Should I switch to a 40 wt oil to help both the leak and does switching to a thicker oil really benefit these engines as they get on in miles?(and age).

    Should I just add an additive like MMO instead?

    Anyone who has had good results with fuel or oil additives please chime in. I just have never done either. One old timer recommended to me that fuel injector cleaners added to the gas help keep these carbs clean and run better???

    I'd run a multi-viscosity oil, er, I do. 10W30 is what's called for in the FSM.

    I use 10w40 in mine. IMO by using a straight weight oil you're not taking advantage of modern multi viscosity oils that provide better lubrication, especially on start up.

    Me three. :) I partially use my oil pres. gauge to determine what kind of oil I use on my '85 GMC 454 - not an odd-fire, but it's the only rig I've driven/maintained since I started educating myself on oils a few years ago. IMHO 10W30 is just too thin for older engines (not built to the precision standards of today, or if they were to begin with are getting a little worn) in summer or other demanding conditions - I know most owner's manuals recommend it, but I can only imagine how thin it is at 200* if it's about the thickness of milk at 90-100*. FWIW, I've settled on a synthetic blend 15W40 in my 454 and I really like the way it's performing (oil pressure fluctuation vs. different engine temps, and it's staying pretty clean after 3,300 miles). If it was me, I'd use your oil pressure as a partial determining factor in what weight oil I used. You might also research a ZDDP additive - it may not make much difference (I assume your engine's doing fine at 71,000) but I'd rather have the peace of mind my cam's not going to get ground off than not.
