Amc 258/232 egr & tcs

    I am in the process of a frame off restoration on my 75 cj5 and have a few questions about the emission system. It ran like crap and didn't want to stay running once warmed up, so I didn't dig into it to much. Well when I pulled the motor yesterday I started looking at it, EGR Valve is missing with no vacuum lines plugged, TCS is hooked up to nothing with no lines plugged. My question is do I really even need any of this, my state has no emissions.

    My EGR and TCS are both non-functioning and the motor runs fine.
    I did have the EGR hooked up for my emissions test but it ran like crap.

    On more modern vehicles, EGR can be necessary to stop spark knock/pinging, but I haven't noticed any on my 258.

    I have not been able to find a solenoid or trans switch for my TCS to make it functional. I understand the theory behind its purpose but haven't been able to prove it's usefulness.

    My advice is don't worry about them and just dial in your carb and timing.

    So does the TCS run off of vacuum, mine isn't connected to anything so I have no idea. Can I just remove it from the engine block and block it off somehow.

    TCS is a solenoid that controls vacuum. It's controlled by a switch on the transmission.

    Check the TSM - it will explain in more detail.

    You have the TSM? You really need the TSM. It has pictures like this, and lots of text to support it.

    Just a caution - there are quite a few differences between the '74 and '75 model years. You'd likely be better off to refer to the '76 TSM (also on that site) for both emissions and electrical issues on a '75. Neither manual will be correct for all systems.

    If you don't have the experience and savvy to sort out the differences between the manuals, I'd suggest that you plunk down the money and buy a reprint of the correct year manual for your Jeep. The book is a good investment - just loaded with info. IMO it's foolish to try and pinch pennies by not having the right manual.

    BTW the picture I posted above is from the '75 manual, and is correct for your vehicle.

    Regarding your first question, please realize that under Federal law it is illegal to remove any emissions devices. Your state just chooses not to enforce the law for cars older than some arbitrary date.

    You can eliminate the entire TCS and spark CTO system, and connect your distributor directly to manifold vacuum. The car will run fine, but the emissions will be higher. I would keep the EGR system, because it affects the fuel mixture above idle. I would keep everything else - vapor recovery, PCV, and TAC. The chart says there's no EGR unless it's a California delivered vehicle. Your manifold has no place to mount an EGR valve.

    I wish the previous owner wouldn't have hacked this up so bad. I'm starting with most pieces missing so sorry for the novice questions, I'm not an engine savvy guy but in learning. Thanks for all the info.

    I'm in the same boat as you relative to a hacked up emissions system. In my thread I ask novice questions too because I am a novice. Most of the time I have to research the answers by googling deeper. This is how we all learn. The know-it-alls on here started out as novices too.
