Picked up my 1959 CJ5 and brought it to my shop to begin evaluation and teared for a rebuild. Could not figure out how to post pictures in my messages threads, but my question is on the right side of the hood and fender is a factory cutout. I assume this is for a mod to have an elevated exhaust.

Yes - it's a snorkel cutout, one of the carryover features from the military. Persisted until the AMC era IIRC.

In fact for the air-cleaner intake snorkel. Military jeep also had a flange on the tailpipe for exhaust extension.

It's a vestige of the Jeep's military heritage. The civilian models were never equipped with factory snorkels, AFAIK. There are other military vestiges, like the bow pocket in the top rail of the body, behind the doors. And the sealed-off battery box on the cowl.
