Oddfire HEI Distributor Drive Gear Part Number

    Anybody know what it is? I did a search here on the forum, and have been to all the usual sources (napa, rockauto, summit, jegs) and have come up dry....

    I screwed up today when putting the distributor back in, and got it bound up and stripped some teeth off the gear when I was bumping it back over.....

    Oddfire and evenfire HEI gears are the same afaik. Might open up more application possibilities. If you simply can't find one anywhere pm me.

    I found that the Buick and Chevy drive gears I have come across appear identical. My first choice would be to pull one from the junkyard to ensure proper hardness of the gear; I have heard of some reproduction replacement parts being made of hardened steel and chewing up camshafts.

    That took a lot of sideways pressure to break the teeth off that driven gear on the distributor. Are you sure you didn't bend the dist shaft when this happened?

    One option would be a complete reman distributor - RockAuto has an Cardone reman for about $100, including the core. A Delco reman is about $125, including a new cap and rotor.

    Yep, already thought of that and checked, luckily, no damage to the shaft itself, somehow I didn't have the teeth splined in properly when I bumped it over to engage the oil pump drive. Not sure what the heck happened. Other than me not paying enough attention.

    Was you able to retrieve all the gear pieces from the pan?

    That's why you don't use the starter to try and engage the distributor gear teeth and oil pump drive. Unfortunately you learned the hard way :(.

    How else would you do it? That's how I've always done this with Slotted-Type oil pump drives

    Yep, got those all, got in through the distributor hole with a blow gun, and blew everything down into the pan, then drained the pan through a paint filter and then dropped the pan to make sure I got them

    I think I just put a socket on the crank bolt and turned it by hand.

    Actually, now that I think about it I reached down through the dist hole and turned the oil pump (slot) until it lined up with the dist shaft (tang).

    I wouldn't consider using the starter to get things in alignment - it may work but I don't have that kind of confidence.

    Use a long screwdriver to line the pump up with where the shaft should be. May take a few times but better than what you went through. I used to do it too. Until I saw happen what happened to you. Once was enough to convince me. Saw it happen a couple times to other people who wouldnt listen.

    So as a follow up to losing the distributor drive gear (which incidentally, was caused by a siezed oil pump, and not me misaligning the distributor gear, but, still my fault), come to find on further inspection, that I knocked a tooth off the distributor drive on the cam...

    So my big question is, as I haven't gotten the front cover back off to look, do the camshafts come with the distributor drive cast and machined into the cam, or is it a seperate gear? I'm not opposed to picking up something like the Comp Cams 252, but I'd rather not buy a camshaft if I can just swap that drive gear out.

    The 225 dist drive gear will be mounted outboard of the oil eccentric and uses the same key.

    Anybody have any idea what the part number is for that gear, or where I could get one? Not having any luck with Summit or Jegs

    If you can find someone with an old enough Jeep parts book, the Jeep numbers on GM parts are typically the same as the GM numbers.

    Found one source. Old GM part number is 1361749, TAperformance has them under part number TA_1399, not cheap though.
