Need some help with this. I found an unmolested 1968 CJ-6 possible Tuxedo edition. The owner has had it for a few years and never registered it or titled it. Used it on his land for a copy years and has been sitting mostly. He has the original bill of sale from the original owner (his best friend). I would be the third owner. The original owner never titled it. How do I get this titled in NY where I reside or is it easier to go through Texas where I am a resident currently. (I am in the military)

Anyone have any experience titling and registering a vehicle this age in NY or TX. Prefer NY as the paperwork delay would be less.

I am gonna jump on this and purchase it anyway because of the condition and deal I am getting. I have heard of salvage titling but do not want to go that route unless I have too.

    Thanks

    Kevin

As a mechanic that has owned my own shop, I have filled for titles in Okla, N Carolina. Lousiana, and probally a few others. You call the DMV. and explain that this vehicle is in your possession and in need of an origional title. Most states will charge you for sending a cetrified letter to the origional ower as they find it in their books. After a waiting period, you can file for it. I have also placed mechanics leins on vehicle left at my shop. I charged the bill plus storage and when the owner didnt claim them or the bill was more than the cars value i could file. Let me lnow if you need any more help.

Best bet is to get in contact with the original owner. Someone has to have a title. Next step would be to apply for a NY title-search to see if there is an active/inactive title, and that can be done online:

    http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/titlestat/default.html

I've had luck obtaining a title for a '64 Tux after the fact. It takes much perseverance to obtain the title legally, but well worth it. :) Good luck!

I live in NY. This is what you do. Get a bill of sale and trace the vin tag. Do not take the vin tag w/ you as they will confiscate it. Then you are on your own. Call DMV and tell them you had this vehicle for 7 years or so, bought it out of state and you were working on it. NY DMV has no access to vin numbers of other states and after three years or so a NY state's vin numbers are deleted if not reregistered. Tell them it's an antique and that you want to register it. Ask what forms do you need. You will need it insured first. Get the antique insurance from JC Taylor or Haggerty. Make sure that the insurance form you recieve in the mail reads antique somewhere on the form. I also brought Jim Allens book to establish year and weight so it was easier for them. Go to DMV w/ all and they immediately give you a transferable registration. It's easy.

Not if it was sold in Alabama or one of several other states that didn't require a title when new. My Jeep was sold in Georgia and brought to Alabama new and has never had a title, I have a vehicle restration and a bill of sale and that is all. I can get a title now but it will cost about $50 and about an hour at the DMV, I have had plates on it for 12 years why bother, I never intend to get rid of it.

If you post the serial number of the jeep we can tell you if it is a tuxedo park or not.

Different states have different rules about titles on old vehicles. AFAIK you do not need to register as an antique - although there are some advantages and disadvantages to getting antique plates. Many states only require a bill of sale on a vehicle that old. You can ask at both Texas and New York registrys and see which one is easiest. As long as there are no liens against the car and it has never been declared stolen, you should have no trouble.
