Quick question concerning a '54 3b I'm looking at purchasing. The jeep does not have a turn signal switch, is this original for this year? And if so, I'm assuming that I can purchase a kit to instale turn signals for the jeep to be safe when driving.

    Thank you.

Turn signals weren't original in '54, in fact they only had a driver's side tail light, passenger side tail light was an option. Yes you can buy turn signal switches to add on.

    From the cj-3b page:

    http://cj3b.info/Tech/SignalWiring.html

My 55 CJ-5 did not have turn signals originally but the original wiring harness did have the socket for the flasher unit and the harness wires were there, it just needed a switch for the column....

They were an option. I had a '53 or '54 parts 3B that had it factory wired in. The switch looks like this:

Thank you for the information. Also thank you 1955CJ5 for the link. Looks like the turn signal I had to order for my '67CJ, all I needed to do was replace the old one, but what if the wiring harness for the 3b doesn't have any prongs to connect the turn signal switch? Is it totally seperate from the harnes? And will I have to instale seperate turn signal lights or can I just use the brake lights?

    thank you

You can use the existing brake lights. The brake light switch gets wired through the turn signal switch and then out to the lights. That is what makes one light still blink when the brakes are applied.

Or just do without turn signals. Hand signals are legal. Geez, hardly anybody signals around here... seems like signals are considered a make-way request to other drivers, rather than a signal. Strange... or at least strange compared to how I learned to drive. In CA the police will ticket for not signaling.

I think it would be cool to own a car from before the time of turn signals.

Heck, you would maybe have to remove the phone from your ear to signal so why bother-------

I wonder how many people actually would understand hand signals? Using hand signals in a Jeep with a soft top can be a pain. Raining for example and trying to zip the window down so you can stick your arm out is not fun, nor easy.

i use hand signals all the time, they might not have anything to do with the direction I'm traveling though.

I drove my 2A for two or three weeks before I installed turn signals. I started out using hand signals, but all I got was perplexed looks and people waving at me.

In my state, turn signals are required for inspection in any vehicle built after 1952. That's why my M38A1 is registered as a "51."

Of course in a small town like this, everyone knows where I'm going anyway...
