What would be the cheapest and easiest fix for the 2:1 ratio, I would like to go with lower gearing. I'm assuming it would be cheaper and easier to go this route than change the R+P on two axles (3.73).

The bronco thing is the cheapest I think.
Tranny swap to something with real low 1st gear is good but $.
The 3 to 1 or 4 to 1 tcase stuff is also $.
Changing the diff gearing with used R & P is an option. Lower $ than new gears.

Yeah, Tera makes a 3.15 kit. The 2.43 "kit" for the 20 cheaper because it mixes Dana 20 and Dana 18 gears, and only needs the one special gear from the Bronco I6 Dana 20. The 3.15 kit is available for the 18 and the 20.

If it were me (and it will be soon) I'd go with the Tera Low 3.15:1 kit. It runs right at $800.

There's also a Dana 300 that came in one year of Scouts that has the Texas pattern (ie same as the Dana 18 or 20). The Dana 300 can be outfitted with Tera 4:1 gears, which doubles your crawl ratio compared to the stock Dana 20. The word is out though, and they are difficult to find or expensive, or both.

You should be able to find a TeraLow 3.15 kit for the D18 or D20 for alot less than $800 !!

Try Bob Supplee, he should be about mid-$600 last time I checked. I did know of one place to get it UNDER $600, but cant locate it right now...

Tim, I think the texas pattern D300 was found only in the 1980 Scout II. Only 27000 were produced.

Didn't know the year, but I recall it's the one with the square headlights.

Lynn, you sure the decimal point is right on that number? 27K seems like the entire Scout II production to me ... maybe not.

$650-$800?For a gear or two!? I might as well save up and get an Atlas. The whole thing will be new and have a lower gear. You can get a whole NOS Dana 20 for less than $500.

It's probably right. I did a little research ... The jeeptech.com page says 30K for the Scout II in 1980, and similar vehicles have similar production numbers. With that many vehicles produced and the present condition of Scouts in general, they should be obtainable. I saw one of them for sale on a Scout board for $750, so I'd guess between $500 and $1K would be expected - comparable to Tera gears (that's probably what sets the prices).

Your best bet is to find a scout d300. Good luck!

The problem with the d20 is its texas bolt pattern. To convert to anything else is gonna require an adapter. Usaully about $500. So dropping in an atlas gets even more expensive. Just putting a jeep d300 is also an expensive conversion.

So to go lower your best bets are basicly convert to 2.46 gears or tera 3.15 gears or regear your axles. I doubt 2.46 gears would be low enough for me on the trail (of course I compare this to my yota thats 100-1 :D ). So it looks like I'll be buying some tera gears in the future. Had a quote off the pirate board from DC 4wd of under $550 shipped to my door.

Anyone here actually running the tera gears in a d20? I've heard the d18 gears are noisy on the highway. I am curious if the d20 is the same even though its a centered rear output.
