The new diesels are both clean and efficient - good competition for the hybrids, with no expensive batteries.

I mentioned Volvos because the one I drove in Europe went 200 kph on the Autobahn very easily, and could have gone faster - the limiting factor was the driver, not the machine.

some pros and cons of the perkins jeep.
the top speed for my jeep is 50mph It can chug up a 40 degree incline
pulling a trailer with 2/3cord of firewood all day long and not lose its breath. diesel stinks so you always take up the rear when with other jeeps. the engine is heavy, so the loss of agility between the 5s and the flatties is even more apparent, my jeep makes a pretty good snowplow.
with the diesel its easier at the pump. if you get the injector pump wet
while crossing a stream it stops you dead and its $$$ to get going again.
if I were to swap in a diesel it would be one from 70s-80s from a small truck or car (the eariler perkins are industrial / agricultural /marine engines fitted with injectors and pumps for that purpose) one benefit
of these older engines ,(the perkins as well) is that the are very easily and cheaply adapted to use bio diesel which is fast becoming an alternative fuel Its easily made by anyone with time and space is nearly pollution and carcinigen free. to have my jeep run on bio would be cool.

Didn't know they put perkins in cjs.

Down in S america most all of the toyotas are diesel. They have some very cool diesel motors they just didn't import many of them to the states. My roomate has a 2wd toy with a 4cyl turbo diesel. Its tired but does ok. He has been building his 4x4 toy for the past 3yrs trying to convert it to a diesel toy motor and burn veggie oil. He's kinda a hippie. :D

I heard another guy that put a 4bt in a land cruiser rock buggy. I guess when it encountered something that would bind up a wheel it would just snap something before the motor would stall. He apparently also had to safety tie everything on the frontend as the vibes would loosen all the bolts.

Why not use one of the new liberty diesels and 6 spd trannies? Mate that to an atlas and have good crawl ratios with good street/highway gearing. Probably wouldn't be too bad in a cj6. Hmmmmmm! R)

Did not know I stirred the nest. I just wandered how many were still around. I'm not sure what engine I'll be using yet. But I do work at a diesel shop.
I have 4bt cummins for my willys wagon and I think it's to long for an early cj. A friend of mine put one in a cj7 and it took up the whole engine comp. He had to use an elec. fan.
The olds 350 problems are very curable, don't discount it.
The Perkins 4-203 or 4-236 are better choices than the 4-194 that came in cjs.
But when it's all said and done I might use the 327 chevy sitting in my shop.

Not stirred up. Good discussion. I found dieselcj's comments particularly interesting.

What's the problem with stream crossong - hydrolock?

The injector pump gets pretty warm and the parts have very strict tolerances the cold water stopped the one in my jeep dead broke. a small shaft in it I learned that its a good idea to pack grease around them for deep water crossings.don`t know if it works!

It would be 'cool' to have a diesel jeep, but I'd rather stick with a gas 6 or 8 cyl and have some fun with it, then tow it home with the diesel tow rig. :)

    dieselcj---what engine do you have?

ghetto fab--- you don't need gas to have fun. there's 8000# dodge trucks running 11s and 12s in the quarter mile. sounds like fun to me.

Once on base at Camp Lejeune, I was about 12 and I talked with a Marine who had a CJ with a Perkins Diesel in it. I thought it was really cool. I liked the sound of it running. That was in the early 70's. Haven't seen one since. I think it could make a really nice set up.
