Chain clutch linkage

I need to get rid of my low hanging mechanical clutch linkage, so I drew this little design up tonite during class. Since I don't have a scanner I had to reproduce it in paint so its not that good :D

I assume this is what the AA linkage is like but I can't see paying $120 for something I can make for $20 or 30. Does it look like it should work?

For those with the AA linkage, how does it mount to the frame rail?

Joe I have a diagram at home on my computer that has an exploded drawing of the AA chain drive clutch mechanism, I will e-mail or post it ommorrow, I'm at work right now so its not possible.

not sure what your pic is of but heres some pics of the linkage and box....the box has a built in bracket at the bottom of it that bolts to the underside of the frame and you just mark and drill it. Then you adjust the linkage. It was very easy to install. I very highly recomend this linkage, it comes with eveything you need and very detailed instructions.

Jason can you please measure the box, I need the height, width and how thick each half is, if it is possible please measure the diameter of the drive sprocket inside of it within reason. What size is the chain, you measure the width of the roller the diameter of the roller and the distance center to center of the roller. If you have calipers or a good machinist scale it would be greatly appreciated by myself and Joe as I am sure after he sees this post he will know exactly what I am going to do.

  5. Mike: I have one sitting in the box on the garage floor I bought from Bob Supplee for $105 including shipping. I'll measure it up tomorrow if you want. I believe the chain is 530. It looks like the 530 I have on my Triumph MC.

Please!!! Thanks a bunch James, I will probably make Joe and I a housing out of aluminum and then find some chain, bearings and sprockets on ebay or a salvage type company.

Looks like mine is almost identical to the AA version.

Mike, you really don't have to go through all the trouble of making them. I have some chain and the rest of the parts are gonna come from the hardware store down the road. I am gonna try to get this done and installed by memorial day because I'm going to my grandparents farm to do some creek crawlin'

Mike I'll try and get some measurements for you. Its going to be tough to measure the gear inside b/c it comes as a sealed box with only holes for the chain.

Joe ,I e-mailed the exploded view with the part numbers to you, hope this helps.

  11. Mike: I'll get the measurements to you this evening. I think I'll just take pics with the tape showing the deminsions. I'd have to take it apart to get the actual tooth count of the sproket--well maybe I can mark one and just count them as I pull the chain around.

    Will let you know.

I thought about making one too, but for $105 including shipping, it just wasn't worth it. But it would be a fun project. :)

  13. Mcruff: Here's the specs on the AA unit. The case is 4 1/4" square, 1" thick to the back plate which is also the mounting plate. I didn't take it apart to measure the sprocket, but it appears to be no more than 3" judgeing by the exit holes in the case. It runs on a 1/2" bolt screwed in from the back. The chain is NOT a 530 (5/8" width & 3/8" pitch) as thought, but the next size down, prolly a 430 or something like that. They used part of master links to connect the chain to the square threaded pieces that the attachment points screw into. The bolt that goes thru the heim joint to the pedal is a Grade 8 ;) .

BTW, the instrouctions say and show that the mount should go on the Inside of the frame rail, not the outside. Don't know if this really makes a difference though. Probablly just less to scrape on rocks.

Thanks alot James, oh machining I will go, machining I will go, well you get the idea. :D

James is there only 2 bolts that hold the aluminum body to the steel back plate, or is there more that just don't show up in the pictures because of not seeing the face of the steel plate.
This looks real easy to make, almost to easy.

  15. Nope, 4 bolts. For some reason the other 2 are blind--don't go thru to the face of the housing. :?

oops must of overlooked that step on the install  guess I'll need to move it to the top side of the frame rail. I didnt think about it being in the way of rocks under there....

  17. Jason: No problem. Just didn't want to mention your pics. But when I was taking the photos, I noticed the instructions and the pics on the last page, so I thought I'd mention it. Actually, I think it would be best to get some good SS button head bolts so everything would slip real nice over everything. The bolts supplied are grade 5. Only need 2. :)

What keeps the gear centered inside the housing?

If you look at the pic of mine it appears to be a shaft that goes through the center of the box ...

What I mean is what keeps the gear from shifting side to side inside the housing?
