It is made out of 3/16 already. I'll probably weld on another plate to make the mounting surface a little wider. I would just cut a new piece but its too time consuming with a cutoff wheel;)

Mike & Joe, nice work! Man I wish I had the where with all to do this kind of stuff. Mike $$ is no object. For this I am sure of. PM me your snail addy and I'll get $20 out to you ASAP. More as needed. Kick some in for time and effort.

Joe/Mike, give AA a call and get a price on just the cable/ball/threaded rod portion. You need that threaded rod for clutch adjustment. I know when I bought my AA unit from a local house, I told them wanted a spare cable/rod section (I was paranoid about the cable breaking... it won't). They ordered and provided the spare at no extra charge.
I'm thinking it may be cheaper to get this piece from them rather than come up with a new design on your own.
Of course, if you call AA don't tell them what you are doing.
    <"yours was damaged in an off-road incident"> Right? ;) :D

    Likewise! I'm in!!!

Mike - be sure to work in a bit of $$ for your efforts. Even if you just get it to the point of needing to add the threaded portion. We can order that individually from AA (rather than you calling to order 4 or 5 of them at a time...).

Same here. I'm in also..I have been wondering if there was a better type of mechanism for the clutch. That is it!!!

Hey guys for now lets put a hold on this asking for one, right now if I can get the housing machined up this weekend at work I will be doing good, I will need to go to tractor supply and get a sprocket and chain to check clearances and such, once I get 1 made and the bugs worked out the rest will follow fairly easy. I will get back to this thread in a few days and try and post a picture of what I made.

Good deal Mike. I knew there would be some time lapse while you got all the bugs worked out. I just wanted you to realize that we are are willing to plop down some $$ for one of these units.

Let us know when you're ready.

I have my CAD drawing done and will stop at Tractor Supply tommorrow morning (if there open at 7:00 am) on the way home from work and check out the sprockets and chain. I'm going to try and rough one out at work tommorrow night if possible.

  10. See Mike, told you that you had a "project" here. ;)

You ready to give up the details to help us build one too! Tired of my clutch pedal binding when all twisted up.

Right now I have the housing machined out of Aluminum, I have a 14 tooth sprocket from Tractor supply ($5.06), I am waiting on a piece of Bronze I ordered to make a bushing for the center of the sprocket. The one bad thing I have seen with the 14 tooth versus the 17 tooth Joe bought is his rides on a bearing but it is a much larger sprocket and will not fit inside the housing I made which is the same size as the AA housing. I will keep tabs on this, I have alot to work on right now with rebuilding the motor and frame on my Cj, so this is not real high priority, at least not till I'm ready for it and then if it works I'll try to make a bunch of housings and bushings all at one and let everybody else assemble, fit and buy the rest of the parts. If I can get the back mounting plate plas cut at work or thru a fab shop I know real well it will help greatly.

I too have started my version of this project. Bought the "connectors"(rodend to chain and chain to cable) from AA for $4.20 apiece, TSC sprocket/bearing for $13.99. Bent up 1/4" bracket for mount, scounged up 18" of#40 chain, links, reused old cable for jeep, rodend. Basically copied AA with some changes to make it work with a PTO shaft running through the area. No fancy box to hide the sprocket yet. Found my frame cross shaft hole for the rodend to be egged, plug welded and redrilled. Haven't tried it yet. Going to elongate hole through floor to eliminate pedal hanging up there when twisted up. I'm going to like this mod!!

Guys, sorry for not getting a parts list together yet. I've been really busy working, going to school, and doing a few plumbing/electrical side jobs. Gimme a few more days

Sounds great. I'm in. Just tell me where to send the $. Now all we need is somebody here to fab up a bolt on disc parking brake and I'll be a happy camper.

I have made the bushing for the sprocket out of bronze and have fit it to the casing, I will try to get a piece of steel for the back of the housing where it mounts to the frame this week sometime. I am sticking with it slowly but surely. It has rained pretty much non stop for 2 weeks here so working on my Jeep is going real slow especially since the humidity is so high!!

    Bracket

What angle did you bend your mounting bracket that bolts to the frame? Also, I'm using a shorter 9.5" overall length cable/ball assembly instead of the 11" cable that came in my jeep, so I'll have the sprocket in front of the PTO. I'm having to work around my PTO and the driveshaft for the winch. Tailpipe no longer runs over crossmember(PTO) so that's not going to be in the way. Will take pics of the parts and install, just need some help getting them uploaded on the website.

I bent the plate to approx. 45 degrees. First I bent the plate to what I thought would work and then mounted it up and bent it further until the chain operated smoothly and did not hit the housing. 45 degrees is what this ended up being. Hope this helps :)
