Does anyone know what the strip is called that goes on top of the grill in between the grill and hood? Does the intermediates have adjustable stops so that you can adjust the gap between the hood and grill?

It's called welting, or welt. No hood stops that I know of.

Thanks again Patrick....... Will I have to drill new holes for those rivets? They look awful small compared to the holes already on my grill.....

also...do you know of anything other way to do this besides the welt? That stuff looks like it wont last very long. I wonder if something off a newer vehicle would work?

FWIW, My '75 never had any welting,,, just a rubber button type bumper on the top of the grill located just between the headlights and the grill opening...

As I recall, there are 4 rubber buttons that replace the welting. The buttons are available from the Jeep retailers too, and I expect they would fit in the same holes as the welting clips do. Search for Jeep PN 5455348.

It may be that 1974 was a change year.
I have a grille that was off a early 74 renegade(high "JEEP") that had the welting. It has thirteen .200dia holes for the clips.

My aug 74 (low "JEEP")cj has the bumpers with four .375 holes.

Well, if the welting needs a lot of little holes, then the two styles are not interchangeable. Certainly my '73 had the welting, and both my '75s have the buttons.

If you have the 3/8" holes Lee, get the buttons.

For ALL your hardware and misc fastener/retainer needs:http://www.wesales.com/pdf/2008-2009-WEBCATALOG.pdf It's a biggie (12MB), any good parts jobber should have access to them. Autobody PBE suppliers usually carry this line. Check #2402, page 11 for the welting retainers.

Interesting, my 74 Renegade is April vintage and has the bumpers.

A garden hose, cut in 1/2 lengthwise.

Or at least that's how the PPO of SSDutch did it...;)

Well, I looked again at the top of the grill and I have BOTH sets of holes!!!!!! hmmmmm I like the idea of bumpstops but then again I also like the idea of having somewhat of a seal all the way across.......dilemas again!!! You guys have some good ideas!!! Thanks for the advice.
I"ll post pics of what (when) I decide to use.....

I used a piece of window channel felt for a commercial step van.

The welting only seems to last 40 or so years.;)
