Help Please - front 4 wheel drive will not work.

    Ok, can you give a brief description of the 3 possibilities? I have pictures of inside the differential on my phone. Does anyone know how I could upload them to the thread? If that's not allowed anybody willing to take a look in an e-mail?

    Use Photobucket to post your pics on thier site and use the links here to post them in the thread.

    My books are out in the shop, but the knuckles can have one of 2 kinds of rzeppa joints (one is very rare and I have only seen it once) or the standard U-Joint setups. Even though your supposed to have one, since they interchange, I have seen all kinds of mix and match.

    theres no reason to pull the carrier out unless you have major slop in your pinion. much of the time they do because the very thin carrier bearing shims tend to break . usually they are still in place so you can mic them and put the right size back in and be good to go. walaks has all that kinda stuff

    Once you get into the knuckle on the side, your going to know how serious it is and if you can replace just the outters and any other colateral damage.

    It may be simpler, and cheaper to replace the entire axle. Is yours still the stock from the factory??

    They are plentiful, and cheap.

    Where are you located, I have the axle from my jeep you can have for hauling it off, minus some brake parts that is.

    As far as i know it is factory stock. I'm in Aguanga, CA in between San Diego & LA so your a bit too far of a drive. I appreciate the offer though!

    I found the 2 piece axle with u joint online for 180.00 from Morris 4x4. I haven't really look any further but will after I get into the knuckle when i get a few days off work. I'm also wondering if the new axle's made today for replacement may be a stronger product? age alone has to play a factor in this too I would think?

    I also saw some performance axles that are way out of my price range for now but possibly later on I will replace the differential and go with a stronger set up with lockers ECT... For now I just want to get it back to operational and have some more fun!

    Well, there are a lot of Jeep folks in your area, maybe someone local will be able to assist you.

    Maybe you should start a new thread, "Aguanga Jeeper needs local assistance" or some such??

    OF course, keeping along the path you are now on is a great way to learn some basic things about the Jeep driveline.

    The axle shafts come out the end of the tube after you get the knuckle off.

    Spindle - Knuckle - the thingy on the end that opens the knuckle so the knuckle part of the shaft can come out :D

    Wrong name - Nick is right :)

    Actually you leave the knuckle on and the axle comes out after the spindle is removed.
    Many aftermarket replacement parts are weaker than original used parts due to inferior materials being used in their manufacture. Transmission and transfer gears, and axle shafts are among those unless you go upgraded materials. I'm not aware of anyone making chromemoly shafts for a 25 or 27......
    Look in the where to find parts sticky post at the top of this section for vendors who may have good used parts. R&P, hermtheoverdriveguy, Partsmike, Collins Jeep, Border Parts, etc., etc., are all possible sources. The good used parts are generally cheaper as well. You also might put a wtb (want to buy) ad in the classifieds section. Thats what it's there for. Someone may have some good parts for cheap that you can use.

    It is not the height that will hurt the JEEP on landing it is the fact you probably had the wheels spinning when you landed. That shock load is what kills axles. Well ok height will kill the JEEP also, it is how you crack frames, bend axles, break leaf springs.
