Hey, I'm surrentlly running a t-90, and I know they're crap. What's the next best thing? Where do I get one, and how much should I be looking to spend? It's going in a '54 m38-a1, and I plan on putting in a 258. I'm also running a twin stick- old school type transfercase. I don't know the exact model. Anything would help, thankyou.

I thought the T-90 was thought of as a good solid tranny (from what I've read). Widely used for many years.

the t90 is a good transmission. Are you attempting to put a straight 6 258 in the m38 ???? Good luck, hope you have lots of money and time because it is a terrible choice. Those straight 6's are TOOO long for short fendered jeeps. Period. Find a v6 and make life easy.

Yep T-90 is a good tranny and a 258 will not fit unless you move the firewall way back, there just is not the room.

That's why in '72 Jeep lengthened the fenders, hood, and frame in front, to accommodate the 232, 258, and 304 V-8's. The T-90 is not crap, in the right application. Nickmil.

Even if the I-6 would fit, would you really want to defile your Jeep in this fashion?

No kidding. There is an old adage amoung Jeep builders. You take AMC out, you don't put it in.

I've always heard that the inline 6 would not fit in the older jeeps.

I've never tried it, but I wonder why it wouildn't fit.

Yeah, I know jeep made the frame longer along with the fenders and hood for the 72 and newer jeeps, but after having looked at postal jeeps with the inline 6 and the short fenders makes me wonder how much (or if) it was lengthened for the I-6 engine to fit, and how much it was lengthened for other reasons.

Postal Jeep grills also are bumped out.

I was going to say that I think the "dog house" is extended on those particular DJ's. An odd creature...

For most applications I agree with your indication- I have heard the grill(nose) referred to as a "dog house" on a Jeep- Perhaps improper slang?

Mmm, could be - don't know. Usually a dog house refers to a bump-out of some kind, usually rectangular in my experience. I've always used the name "bubble grille" for those postal grilles, but I don't know if I invented the name or heard it somewhere.

Doghouse to me indicates from the firewall forward. Then I've not heard the term in quite some time so my memory may be fuzzy.

doghouse is at the firewall. Cabover trucks and passenger vans have "dog houses" over the engine. Always been that way and always will.

the "pushed out grille" on the DJ's allowed the inline to fit, along with the other differences with the Postal DJ's.... Even when the Popstal DJ's went to the "Iron Duke" GM 2.5L 4 Cyl. inline, they still had the pushed out grille, until the ultimate demise of the DJ5 Postal "Jeep".

My 59 CJ5 currently has a flathead six in it. I'm not sure how that compares to a 258 but I think it would be possible.

Your's is most likely a studebaker champion flathead. That was a popular swap. Much shorter than a 258.
