Air pressure guage was another useful item, just don't bring all those extra 'skeeters next time. I'll gladly trade TP for no bugs.

Staun Quick deflaters set to 20PSI, a new compressor that will allow me to air averything back up and a manual guage to verify everythign is working. I also have a 10lb. CO2 bottle and mount that needs to find a home in the Jeep. All of these I had before the trip, they just some how did not make it into my trail bag.

And the skeeters were not my fault. Ya'll found them first. R)

Mad Electrical has a selection chart for Delco alternators: http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/delcoremy.shtml

The 37 and 42 amp applications will be from cars without air conditioning. Mad Electrical lists the applications for the 63 amp. You can clock the rotation of the alternator to any clocking that you want if you are willing to take the alternator apart.

IF you have an ammeter that works, you don't want to use the high-amp version of the alternator, since all the charging current goes under the dash and through your ammeter. If I wasn't going to change the wiring around to bypass/eliminate/replace the ammeter, I'd go with a low-current rating like 37 or 42 amp. I doubt that the original generator put out more than about 30 amps - maybe Walt can comment on this.

Pick the clocking you need from the Mad Electrical page, and then check for a non-AC app at www.rockauto.com - there will even be pictures there. This should give you a complete app for the alternator.

    ok
    i need a 42 amp 3 oclock delco 10si.
i am just going to call the parts stores and give them that information and hope for the best.
(these guys are helpless without a specific parts number.)

    i used the rockauto page.
    all they have is
    brushes
    diodes
    and bearings for an alternator.
    thanks anyway.

I don't know where you are going astray.

    www.rockauto.com

    Chevrolet->1978->Camaro->350->Electrical->Alternator/Generator

    1978 CHEVROLET CAMARO 5.7L 350cid V8 4BBL (L) OHV : Electrical : Alternator / Generator ... No AC, REMY Part # 20038 Reman without Air Conditioning; 42 Amps $38.79 plus $10 core.

This is a 3 o'clock 10si according to Mad Electric.

The 63 amp ones will work just as well and will run a little cooler. The alt will only put out what is needed to maintain your total load. If you are only using 18 amps total load, then the alt will put that 18 amps to your load circuits and that is all.

My understanding - with the larger alternator, everything will be fine as long as your battery stays near fully charged. The amount of current produced by the alternator depends on the battery voltage. If the battery voltage is low (ie after a jump start), the alternator will deliver its full output capacity.

The weak link in this process is the ammeter. Dash fires due to overloaded ammeters are common in some vehicles - such as full-sized Jeeps and some Dodge cars and trucks. Look at this page on the Mad Electric site: http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/amp-gauges.shtml Jeep trucks and Wagoneers have this problem too, and the dash fire problem is well known. The ammeter on my J-10 is bypassed just for that reason.

JMO - using a 63 amp alternator for this application is a bad idea. The ammeter and wiring are not up to the job. Look at your ammeter - what is the range? Likely 20-0-20 or 30-0-30 ... the ammeter capacity will be exceeded if the 63 amp alternator charges at full capacity. Plus the wire to and from the ammeter is too small for that many amps. Not good. Might be ok, but I would not want to test it.

there is no ammeter and it is all new wiring.
there was a disconnected ammeter in the dash when i bought the slug ,
but i tossed it in the shed because i never figured out how to hook it up.:)

    Well ok then. :tea:

You don't want an ammeter anyway - for reasons given above. A voltmeter would be handy if you want to fill the hole in the dash. Voltmeters are really easy to connect too.
